More photos... but where are the words? by James (11 comments)

Hello! We’re in Vancouver now and staying with my cousin, Greg Mori in his swanky downtown apartment. Tomorrow, we’re hopping back on a Greyhound to spend the next few days in Seattle, I’ll try to bring you up to speed then, although Tessa’s done a great job of taking you through the last few weeks to make up for my silence.

Sorry about leaving you all in the dark like this, it’s despicable I know, but I’m working on it. I’ve added a whopping load of 59 new photos to the gallery to appease you in the mean time. Let’s hope I have more luck than Chamberlain.

Note: the photos are sorted chronologically so some will appear below those taken on Tessa’s side trip to New Jersey.

Update: I’ve added a further 52 photos and we’re now up to date on the imagery front!

WOOPS = Sorry for impatient sounding message on bottom of Tessa’s message - I don’t know why I couldn’t find this entry in that section of the website!?!

Glad to see from the photos that you made it to VAN safely - and very nice to be able to stay in Greg’s downtown place - very cool! Thank you Greg! And a lovely dinner at Cat and Brian’s too, I see! I feel quite jealous of all you are doing!

Who’s Chamberlain? You surely don’t mean the British Prime Minister!

I’m off to look at ALL the new the photos and drool!

Hi It’s me again.

Just scrolled through every single photo and WOW what a treat! I’m glad to see that there is a caption under each one - it helps a lot! That’s where your missing words are.

I loved the Canéjun Tayur one - I knew it was for me and maybe one or two others only!

Heh Heh

Thanks for these - real gifts! It made me reflect upon how visual I am and maybe our society has become - that we are satisfied wiith photos, when there aren’t a lot of words. We can make a lot of meaning out of a picture… Sometimes not necessarily the meaning the author intended! What thinkest thou?

Hi Mum,

Glad you were finally able to leave a comment and enjoyed the photos. I find with the writing that I agonise so much over what I write that it takes me a while to get it all down so I end up putting it off.

With the photos, it’s also a bit of an effort to pick and choose the best from all the shots I take (I could never just put everything up… it would be awful!) but I think it’s really important to add a context to each one, which is why I put those captions in there. Often you can see a photo, and it can be beautiful, but with a story to go with the shot, you can appreciate it a lot more because you can better identify with it.

By the way, we actually stayed with Catherine for the first two nights but Greg lives near the Greyhound stop so he put us up the night before we headed down here to Seattle. It was a nice change of pace to just relax in the pool and spa they have downstairs!

Missing you lots and I’ll try to write some more soon. Hope you’re taking good care of yourself.

Lots of love,

James <3

Hey Madeleine! Hope you’re well, glad you are enjoying the site.

Geez he’s such a perfectionist! ;) I just write junk and put it up… speaking of which I have to get up to date again.

Mmm hottub.

love, Tess xx

Some fantastic shots and some great captions! Some real beauts in there, including that subway-roof shot, fantastic.

And 1000 words per picture, your word debt is more than paid. I’ll harass you for some high-res version when you get back to Angleterre ;)

James-eye view is engaging, stunning and funny. ‘ppreciate it!

6: matt says:

I am speechless. Your picutures, however, are the exact opposite! They are absolutely stunning. You really have an eye for the world around you. Can’t wait to hang out this weekend! (And then a few days later in LA!) =)

7: Strat Caldecott says:

Great pics but can we have less cats and flowers and more of my beautiful daughter in exotic cool locations please thanks! What are we paying you for? (Oh, we aren’t paying you, sorry.)

8: James Wheare says:

I’m sorry, the cats and flowers stay, you don’t want to know the alternatives.

Besides, isn’t Beacon Hill a cool and exotic location, and Seattle Center, and with my cousins in Vancouver… and Harvard Square… New York… and and and…

Come on Strat, I thought you were a perceptive one.

9: Sophie says:

james my darling, the photos are beautiful. ‘times square at 2am’ is especially cool, i hope you don’t mind if i use it in my textiles?! (the projects called ‘glow’ and i’m doing blurry city lights etc…) xxxx

10: James Wheare says:

Of course you can use it! I’ll send you a much bigger version to print. Anyone else who wants hi-res versions, let me know.

Hey Jim, What lovely photographs. Thanks for sharing your adventures. I love reading up about you. I can’t believe that’s you in some of the shots! Yikes!
